How We Test Career Tools

Every CareerToolLab review follows the same hands-on process. No press demos, no vendor-supplied screenshots, no reviews written from a pricing page.

The process

  1. We sign up like a normal user. Real accounts, on the free plan, with no special access.
  2. We complete the core task. For a resume builder that means building a full resume from scratch; for a cover letter generator, producing a letter for a real job posting; for a tracker, running it against an actual multi-week search.
  3. We attempt the export without paying. This is where most "free" tools stop being free. We record whether a download works without a credit card, whether output is watermarked, and what limits apply.
  4. We record pricing on a specific date. Including trial mechanics and auto-renewal terms. Every review carries a "last tested" date.
  5. We capture screenshots. Evidence comes from inside the tool, not from its marketing site.
  6. We score with consistent weights. Each category has a fixed rubric (for resume builders: free-plan transparency 20%, export options 20%, template quality 15%, ATS-friendly formatting 15%, AI features 10%, ease of use 10%, pricing 5%, privacy 5%), so scores are comparable across tools.

What we look for

  • What the free plan actually includes — not what the homepage implies
  • Whether export/download is blocked or watermarked
  • Real pros and cons from use, not feature lists
  • Who each tool is genuinely best for — and who should skip it
  • Alternatives worth considering

Tools change constantly. If you spot something outdated, tell us and we'll retest.
